When people think of professional golf, they picture private jets, country clubs, trophy ceremonies, and million-dollar paychecks.

Sometimes those things exist, but most of the time, professional golf looks a lot different.

Here are 13 stories that only professional golfers will truly understand.

1. Dragging Your Luggage Through Airports

I don't think people realize how much luggage golfers travel with.

You've got a golf bag, a suitcase, a carry-on, and your personal item.

My least favorite thing about tournament travel is arriving at the airport and realizing I have to get on the rental car shuttle bus with all my bags.

There's nothing quite like trying to drag all your belongings onto a crowded shuttle while everyone else is carrying a single roller bag.

2. Waking Up and Having No Idea Where You Are

There have been mornings when I've opened my eyes and genuinely needed a minute to figure out what city I was in.

Was I in Michigan? Arkansas? Arizona? Outside of the U.S.?

After enough travel, your brain simply gives up trying to keep track.

3. Spending $3,000 and Making Absolutely Nothing

Flights, hotels, rental car, food, caddie fees, entry fees… A tournament week can easily cost several thousand dollars.

Then you miss the cut by one shot and earn exactly $0.

Professional golf is just one of those jobs where you can work a full week and actually lose money.

4. Warming Up in Complete Darkness

There's something funny about being a professional athlete and not being able to see the ball you're hitting.

When you have a 7:00 a.m. tee time, you're often warming up before sunrise.

You're on the range with floodlights, half asleep, wondering why you chose this profession.

5. Thinking a 9-Hour Drive Isn't That Bad

At some point, professional golfers completely lose perspective. A normal person hears "nine-hour drive" and starts looking for flights.

A professional golfer hears "nine-hour drive" and says, "Honestly, that's not too bad."

I've driven across the country with other players, stuffed three people into one hotel room, and considered it a financially responsible decision.

Because it was.

6. The Visa Panic

One of the greatest feelings of terror is realizing 45 minutes before boarding that you don't actually have permission to enter the country you're flying to.

Nothing gets your heart rate up quite like frantically Googling visa requirements while standing at the airport terminal wondering if you’ll actually make your flight. This happened to me on my way to Korea, when I thought I had a 2 year visa but it was actually a 1 year. Whoops! (I ended up barely making my flight :)

7. Traveling 30+ Hours for Two Rounds of Golf

Professional golf can be incredibly humbling. You can spend over a day traveling across the world. Adjust to a new time zone, practice for three days, play two tournament rounds - and miss the cut.

Next thing you know you’re back on a plane going home with nothing. They don’t put that on a highlight reel!

8. Finding a New Caddie Two Days Before The Most Important Tournament Of Your Life

Most players spend months preparing for the biggest events of their careers.

I spent part of my Solheim Cup preparation finding a new caddie because my original one made some bad decisions that got him cut from the team.

Not exactly how I drew it up, but somehow in the end it all worked out, and I met my long-term caddy Jonny because of all of that. Sometimes things happen for a reason.

9. The Autograph Request I Couldn't Accept

I've signed hats, flags, golf balls, programs, photos. One drunken fan, however, asked me to sign his large belly underneath his shirt.

I chose to sign his hat instead.

10. "What Do You Do For Work?"

This conversation became exhausting after a while. When I said I was a professional golfer, the follow-up questions never ended.

So I learned an easy way out:

"What do you do?"

"Oh, I work at H&M."

Nobody ever had a single follow-up question. Conversation over.

11. The Missing Golf Clubs Adventure

Nothing ruins your day faster than standing at baggage claim and realizing your golf clubs aren't coming.

The hunt begins: airtags, file references, airport visits, promises that they’ll be on the next flight..

I've had clubs arrive the morning of my Thursday tee time - not ideal preparation.

12. Refreshing the Cut Line Every Five Minutes

You finish your round on Friday and suddenly become a full-time leaderboard analyst. Refreshing the website to check if you’ll make it to the weekend rounds and calculating the projected cut number based on how difficult the finishing holes are and if the wind is picking up or calming down.

For several hours, your emotional state depends entirely on others playing golf.

13. The Reality Behind Professional Golf

This might be the biggest misconception of all. People assume every professional golfer is incredibly wealthy and living a glamorous life.

The truth is much different for most players. It's doing laundry at a laundromat on Monday morning. It's eating Chipotle at 11 p.m. because you chose the cheap connecting flight instead of the expensive direct flight. Splitting hotel rooms, rental cars, and Airbnbs with other players to save money.

It's carefully managing expenses so you can keep more of the money you worked so hard to earn. There are incredible moments in professional golf. I've experienced things I never dreamed possible.

But behind every trophy photo is a lot of airport shuttles, delayed flights, shared hotel rooms, and difficult days on the golf course.

And honestly, that's part of what makes the journey memorable.
